Group spokeswomen Sharon Hopkins met with an adviser from the Department of Health and Human Services, the body responsible for adding fluoride to a town's water supply.
Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said she would always take time to listen to community concerns; however, she said research showed having access to fluoridated water from a young age was associated with less tooth decay.
“We’re currently looking at the feasibility of adding fluoride to Tatura’s drinking water supply following a request from a local community action group; however, there is no formal proposal at this stage,” Ms Mikakos said.
“Ninety per cent of Victorians already have access to fluoridated drinking water.”
A submission from the group will make its way to Victorian Parliament this week, after a meeting with Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed.
Ms Sheed said it was her duty as an MP to table petitions on behalf of constituents.
“I will be submitting Ms Hopkins’ petition on water fluoridation to the parliamentary clerks’ office and from there it will be tabled and recorded into Hansard,” Ms Sheed said.
“I commend Ms Hopkins on the enormous amount of work she put into this endeavor and collecting so many signatures.”
The group will wait until the feasibility study is carried out before making its next move.
Ms Hopkins said the group would continue to fight for the hundreds of people who signed the petition.
“We do not want a toxic substance in our water,” Ms Hopkins said.
