Phil Boyd (S) and Col Johnson belied their underdog status with a dominant start to the match and a third of the way through were leading comfortably and well in control 10 shots to 2.
However, you can't keep a champion like John Attwood subdued for long and, along with his most capable bowling partner, who is also his grandson, Ash McDonell, they were only down three shots at nine ends and halfway mark, nine shots to 12.
The game was tight from this time on and on the 15th end Boyd and Johnson were up by two shots 16 to 14 with three ends to play, but this was to be the last time they would head Attwood and McDonell.
Going into the last end Attwood-McDonell were up by two shots and looking quite comfortable for a championship win.
With only a single bowl from each of the skippers to play the game was actually in Boyd's and Johnson's favour for they held three shots and the game up by one shot.
Attwood's last bowl, down by three shots and the game and championship in the balance, drew an absolute blinder to rest on the three-shot bowls and lie just centimetres behind the kitty.
Boyd with his last shot was unable to alter the head and the Attwood-McDonell combination won the championship in an absolute thriller.
Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to Boyd and Johnson for they put in a mighty effort on the day.
Tatura Bowls Club, like all sporting clubs, is indebted to the many volunteers within its organisation.
It is always risky to single out individuals when there are so many that help around the club.
However, as a member of Tatura and as president I would particularly like to mention the great contribution the club receives from Jenny and Col Johnson.
Jenny in particular does not even play bowls, but she is always there contributing in a variety of tasks around the club.
Jenny and Col we sincerely thank you.
