Kialla couple Matt Rees and Chloe Warburton were awoken by a loud bang — and a large tanker — outside their home.
Upon hearing a noise early in the morning, Ms Warburton went outside to investigate.
‘‘At about 2.45am we heard this almighty bang,’’ she said.
‘‘We went outside to have a look, but couldn’t see anything because it was so dark, so we went back inside.’’
Not long after, they received a knock on their door.
‘‘A police officer knocked on the door,’’ Ms Warburton said.
‘‘We looked out the front and everything was lit up and there was a tanker sitting in our front yard and the gum trees had been knocked down.
‘‘They did an amazing job of cleaning it all up the next morning. We sat and watched it all and it was a fantastic response.’’
Police said the truck driver was allegedly travelling west on River Rd when the rear trailer became unhitched before colliding with a tree.
Ms Warburton said she was glad to hear the truck driver was all right.
‘‘So thankful that it didn’t turn out worse,’’ she said.
Police had the site cleared after 5am yesterday.
