At its ordinary council meeting last week, Edward River Council resolved to amend the cost of standpipe water from $11 per kilolitre to $4 per kilolitre.
The delivery fee of $450 will not change.
At the original price of $11 per kilolitre, council’s charges were more than double the charge for standpipe water in neighbouring councils.
Mayor Ashley Hall said council would also consider a new longer-term pricing structure in the 2025/2026 budget process.
“This fee reduction demonstrates our commitment to supporting rural communities and ensuring access to affordable and reliable water sources,” Cr Hall said.
“Regional standpipes are crucial for communities remote from water schemes, providing a vital water source for domestic, commercial and agricultural needs.”
Whilst Council supplies drinking water to the township via reticulated water mains, some rural properties lie outside this supply area and rely on alternative means of capturing and storing water.
Council operates two permanent bulk water filling facilities, commonly referred to as standpipes, across the Local Government Area.
These are located on Hay Rd, opposite Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre, and at the Deniliquin Saleyards.
Many regions across Australia are experiencing reduced rainfall and hotter, drier conditions, making water carting and standpipes increasingly important for securing water supply.
Council CEO Jack Bond said the changes make good sense.
“The reduction in the cost per kilolitre will help to bring us in line with the charges incurred in neighbouring councils and will make things a little easier for our rural residents.”
The reduction would mean the cost of 30kL of water would drop from $330 to $120.
Mr Bond said in a typical financial year, 3000kL is drawn from the standpipe.
If the approved price reduction is carried over into the new financial year, he estimates lost revenue would be about $21,000.
But Mr Bond said a lower price may increase usage, which could cover that shortfall.
