The 40 First Nations students at St Mary’s Primary School, Mooroopna, and their families were joined in solidarity by the school’s community for a rally on the final day of Reconciliation Week, Friday, June 3.

The theme of the week this year was ‘Be Brave, Make Change’, which could be heard chanted by the St Mary’s kids along with ‘reconciliation, right across the nation’ as they marched around the school’s perimeter.

Students dressed in black, red and yellow — the colours of the Aboriginal Flag — while participating in Reconciliation Week activities.
Dreamtime stories were read by Grade 6 students to younger kids, and Yorta Yorta songs were taught to the students.

The students were also taught about significant dates, such as Mabo Day, which commemorates the victory of Eddie Mabo in the High Court, which led to the Federal Government recognising the land rights of Traditional Owners.
The school also held a reconciliation breakfast for First Nations families on the morning of the rally.
