Emma King, who runs the firm alongside Luke Slater, has been recently recognised as an accredited specialist in criminal law.
Accredited specialists are experts in their field and are required to pass challenging exams administered by the Law Institute of Victoria.
It is a nationally recognised accreditation and Ms King is the only criminal law-accredited specialist in the Goulburn Valley.
Mr Slater and Ms King established their criminal law firm in 2016 and have built a strong reputation as defence lawyers in Shepparton.
Along with their employee lawyer Laurence Waugh, they represent people charged with offences ranging from drink driving to murder.
Mr Slater said the firm regularly provided pre-interview advice.
“We get calls all sorts of hours of the day and night to provide advice to people who are locked up and about to get interviewed by police,” he said.
Ms King said being criminal defence specialists helped the team stay on top of the court system.
“When someone is charged with a criminal offence, very rarely is it straightforward. There is always more to it than what’s on the front page of the brief,” she said.
“We fight hard for our clients, every step of the way, from the initial bail application at the start of the case to a contested hearing or jury trial.”
Mr Slater and Ms King each have over 10 years of experience in criminal law and met at Legal Aid, where they first worked together.
The Slater and King office is located across the intersection from the Shepparton Police Station and the team is kept busy, appearing predominantly in the Shepparton, Seymour and Cobram courts.
