Kyabram AH&P Society Inc secretary Janelle McDonald said the show was particularly special for younger participants.
“There is nothing nicer than the face on a little kid if they have won a ribbon or prize money; their little faces just glow — it is all worth it,” she said.
“A lot of people think, ‘Oh, I am not good enough’, but nothing is not good enough; you can make it accordingly, and we can fit it in the show somewhere.
“No matter how good or how bad your entry is, it is always worth putting it in and having a try.
“The show is all about participation.”
This year’s show will have all the usual classes — cattle, horses, dogs, poultry, Boer goats, arts and craft, and cooking — along with sideshows and free entertainment for the kids.
The show is expanding this year to include a twilight youth dairy show on the Friday night.
Sponsored by Bovine Inseminations, the twilight dairy show is for young people aged from eight to 21 to show off their calf-rearing and handling skills.
The Friday night competition is open to any breed, cross, colour or description and bull or heifer calves.
Outside the Friday night youth dairy show, the dairy cattle judging will be on Saturday as usual, with the all-breeds at noon.
Always big at the show is the horse show.
“The annual horse show will start at 8.30am and I think the horses go most of the day; it is quite a big horse show,” Janelle said.
“They are having a kids’ class where the little kids can go and they get dressed up and play games, for a little bit of entertainment for the little ones in the horses, for the young ones that are too little to be judged in the general classes.”
This class is for non-regular show-goers in ring nine, starting at noon in the rodeo area of the arena, with no riding jacket allowed and all competitors receiving a ribbon.
At the end of ring nine, there will be a grand parade for all the fun ring competitors.
The schedule to enter classes at the show has been distributed around town or is available from Janelle or the show office at the Kyabram Showgrounds.
Entries must be entered and paid for before the close of business on Tuesday, October 17, at the Kyabram Showgrounds office.
The twilight youth dairy show is on Friday, October 20 from 5pm.
The show is on Saturday, October 21, at the Kyabram Showgrounds, Anderson St, Kyabram.
