An impressive citizenship ceremony was led by Mayor Julia Cornwell McKean as part of the shire’s Australia Day celebrations.
“Congratulations to all - we are so pleased you are calling the Berrigan Shire home,” the Mayor said.

Gretchen Thorburn - Gretchen is originally from Auckland, New Zealand, and now lives in Tocumwal. She enjoys the peaceful lifestyle of the Berrigan Shire, where access to nature is right on her doorstep. Gretchen especially appreciates living in a small community, where the close connections and friendly atmosphere make it a wonderful place to call home.
Elvira Van Dam and her daughter Felisha Joven - Felisha and Elvira enjoy living in the Barooga area because of its peaceful, quiet environment, which has provided them with a welcoming and relaxed place to call home. They appreciate the sense of calm and community that Barooga offers, making it a perfect place for them to settle and enjoy their lives.
Dineli, Janikuge, Nethuli, Sanula Fernando and Kaththota Sandanayke- Dineli, Janikuge, Nethuli, Sanula and Kaththota came to Australia for work, seeking new opportunities. They’ve embraced their new life here in Finely and are proud to be part of the community, contributing to its growth and diversity.
Thomas Jr, Carren, Rachel and Thomas Lii Divinagracia - Carren, Rachel, Thomas Jr and Thomas have found a welcoming and supportive community in Berrigan. They appreciate the kindness of the people, the sense of safety and the overall lovely atmosphere that makes them feel at home.
Porntipa Allen - Porntipa enjoys living in Finley because of the quiet area and the friendly people. She finds Finley a perfect place to live and work, especially in her role at the nursing home, where she feels supported and appreciated.
Jennifer and Louis Breytenbach- Jennifer and Louis Breytenbach grew up in a small village near Johannesburg, where they spent most of their lives. Flying to Australia was a big step for them, and they went straight to Finley, eventually moving to Tocumwal after six months. They love the strong sense of community - everyone knows each other, and they enjoy having people around. Grateful for the opportunities they’ve had, they feel lucky to have started their own family here, raising their two boys in a welcoming and vibrant community.
