A gold coin donation gave onlookers the chance to witness an exhibition of football across three matches as Shepparton Soccer Club held a gala day celebrating its 60th anniversary, hosting an array of talent looking to do their badges proud.
The games provided a great opportunity for teams to stretch their legs in the lead up to their respective seasons, with Lalor United Masters taking on Shepparton Soccer Club’s Masters in the first tie of the evening.
The game proved a tough contest, with the home side edging the visitors 4-2, however, it was heartbreak in the seniors for Shepparton as Lalor United exacted revenge from a free kick inside the box to clinch victory in the 90th minute.
National Premier League 1 heayweight Altona Magic was looking for a confidence booster one week out from the competition’s opening, but was humbled by State League 1 side Preston Lions 2-1.
Fund raising organiser Donny Stojanovski was over the moon with how the gala day went.
‘‘The day was set up to support the future and longevity of the club and it was definitely worth it,’’ he said.
Stojanovski’s contacts in Melbourne helped bring the visiting sides to the Goulburn Valley and the outcome of the occasion suggests the possibility of a repeat.
‘‘There’s been talk of hosting another one,’’ Stojanovski said.
With Shepparton Soccer Club remaining somewhat dormant in the past few years, coach Reno Lia is looking to build a foundation for success in the seasons to come.
