It has been a busy week or so for the Shepparton Search and Rescue squad.

Local crews were out responding to two-dozen requests for assistance on Monday, September 2, following extreme wind conditions across the region, and also attended the scenes of three road accidents across the day.
It comes after last week’s storm event, which mostly affected the areas north of Shepparton - including Zeerust and Bunbartha - and a spate of recent, serious road accidents.
“We had about 24 requests from assistance due to the storm,” Shepparton Search and Rescue president Nacole Standfield said.
“We were out from about 4am until 5pm.”
Ms Standfield - who was coincidentally celebrating her birthday on Monday - said the vast majority of calls were related to trees being down.
“When we started off it was mostly trees over roads, we were out at the Shepparton-Katamatite Rd and north of Shepparton (initially),” she said.
“It was quite creepy being out there at 4am, and the wind was quite strong still.
“As people woke up they realised the damage that had happened at their houses so that’s when we were called to more trees on cars, one on a roof, footpaths and lots of fences - as well as one on a power line.”
The Shepparton Search and Rescue squad worked tirelessly across the day to clear as many trees as they could.
“We were on a rotation, so we roughly had about 10 of us that filtered through across the day,” Ms Standfield said.
“Some would head to work or have a break and then others would rotate in.
“The other storm last week was also a big wind event, and again that was mostly north of Shepp and mostly trees down.
“It’s just been crazy weather.”
And as for advice on how to stay out of trouble in weather events like these, Ms Standfield had a simple message - take it easy.
“When we’re out driving at 4am we’re well below the speed limit - people need to slow down in those conditions and preferably not drive at all,” she said.
“It’s so unpredictable, and the amount of debris out there gets really dangerous when it’s dark.
