Recognised annually, World Cancer Day is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control, which aims to raise awareness and help close the gap in cancer care.
To acknowledge the day, members of staff at Shepparton Private Hospital will wear a splash of purple on Friday, February 3, with purple cake and cupcakes to be served for morning tea.
The team at Shepparton Private is encouraging members of the community to come forward and speak openly about their cancer journey in an effort to overcome stigma and reduce fear.
“This World Cancer Day we’re asking the Goulburn Valley community to talk openly about cancer — your experiences, your concerns, and ask any questions you may have,” hospital chief executive Rhys Jones said.
“This can increase understanding, encourage detection and help reassure others who may be on the cancer journey, either personally or with a loved one.
“At Shepparton Private Hospital, we have a strong oncology service and our people are passionate about providing patients with an exceptional standard of care.”
The hospital began offering oncology services to the local community in June 2016, with three chairs available now for chemotherapy and infusion therapy treatments.
Mr Jones emphasised that those seeking cancer treatments had options close to home.
“The local community don’t need to travel into the Melbourne CBD to receive quality care, we have great services on our own doorstep,” Mr Jones said.
“Every step of your cancer care journey, we are with you, with a treatment plan tailored to your needs and a network of co-ordinated support services, our experienced teams of locals are ready to help.
“I want the very best for the local community and want everyone to know the local services available to them.”
