However, it won’t take place on an asymmetrical court, and the only matches held will be to light the candles.
The reason being the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club is hosting a reunion event prior to its 100th annual Easter tournament.
On Friday, March 22, past and present players and enthusiasts of the game are invited to the club rooms for an evening of entertainment, nostalgia, and revelry.
“Everybody’s welcome that’s had anything to do with the tournament in the past – thousands of people have walked through those doors in the club’s history,” former club president John Starritt said.
Attendees can leave their polo shirts on the hanger for an evening of non-sporting attire and mingling.
Ray Gale will be playing his tunes while guests enjoy the serving of gourmet finger food and drinks at bar prices.
During the event, the club will pay tribute to its rich history, which dates back to the 1880s, with speeches from past associates and a few formalities.
“The history is fantastic ... and the Easter tournament has been a great thing for Shepparton over the 100 years,” Mr Starritt said.
“It’s been a great family tournament, that’s always been a strong point, but also a really high-standard tournament.
“We’re very proud of it and the number of players we’ve had, including a lot of world-class players playing in it.
“For instance, Neil Fraser won it the year before he won Wimbledon, and then he came up after Wimbledon as well.”
For current players, the reunion is just a warm-up.
From March 29 to April 1, the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club will host its 100th annual Easter tournament.
At that time, it’s game on for the players to see who will add their names to the century-long list of tournament greats.
Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club’s 100th Easter tournament reunion is on Friday, March 22, at 5.30pm, at the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club, 196 Welsford St, Shepparton.
