On Monday, September 9, Shepparton Club presented a $5000 cheque to the Goulburn Valley-based charity as part of its ongoing community support efforts.
“We support local, and People Supporting People is one of many organisations we help around Shepparton,” Shepparton Club general manager Wayne Sutton said.
People Supporting People prepares and delivers meals to the homeless and most vulnerable members of the community.
Following a demanding day at his Shepparton restaurant, founder Azem Elmaz loads his ute with meals and hampers and embarks on his daily delivery runs — five runs a day that often stretch up to six hours.
However, his food delivery ute is no longer reliable.
Now, the tables have turned, and the community is presented with an opportunity to reciprocate Mr Elmaz’s generosity by helping fund a new vehicle, ensuring the continuity of his vital service.
Shepparton’s people are known for shows of solidarity, so it was no surprise donations had reached $29,745 as of Friday, September 13.
A portion of this is due to state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe championing the cause and rallying local organisations, such as the Shepparton Club, to contribute.
“I straightaway said, ‘No problem,’ and we jumped on board,” Mr Sutton said.
“We are a community club ... we’re here for the community, and we support the local charities within, as well as a number of sporting groups.
“Unfortunately, sometimes, without support, these organisations wouldn’t exist.”
As contributions to the GoFundMe page continue to pour in, the fundraising target of $50,000 is edging closer.
It’s a lot of dosh, but according to Mr Sutton, no-one deserves it more.
“What Azem does and has done in the community over the years is outstanding,” he said.
“He’s selfless and a true gentleman.”
