But that is $2000 short of his $10,000 target.
So Mr Kelly has bowed to pressure and agreed to have a shave and a haircut if there are enough donations to make up this shortfall.
“My bearded face and flowing locks have drawn plenty of attention and, if you like, a critique of my appearance,” he said, acknowledging it has not all been positive.
However, if the beard is going to be removed and the scissors taken to his hair, it must be worthwhile.
“I’m sitting right on $8000. If I can get another thousand (dollars) I’ll shave the beard.
“If there’s another thousand on top of that, I’ll have a haircut,” said Mr Kelly, emphasising the hair will be cut, but his head will not be shaved.
More than $4600 was raised for the cause at last Friday night’s charity golf fundraiser.
Mr Kelly said it was a humbling experience raising such a significant amount of money in around three hours, adding it would not be possible without the support of local businesses, the golf club and its members, and the community in general.
