Good careers advice is a cornerstone of Seymour College’s approach, ensuring that students are equipped to make informed decisions about their professional lives. This process begins with understanding oneself—identifying unique interests, skills, and values—and aligning them with suitable career options. Here are key points to consider when seeking excellent careers advice:
Self-Assessment: At Seymour College we encourage all students to assess their strengths, weaknesses, interests, skills, aptitudes, and values. This self-reflection helps young people identify potential career paths that align with their passions and abilities. All Year 9 students complete a Morrisby assessment to assist students to raise their self-awareness. The assessment is then followed by a one-on-one student and career practitioner meeting where each students’ results is unpacked with them and their parent/guardian if they also wish to attend.
Research: Students research a variety of industries and careers thoroughly. This includes understanding the job role, responsibilities, location and salary information, qualifications required, and potential career progression.
Networking: Networking is essential for career development. Students attend networking events and connect with people in a range of fields and industries.
Education and Training: Later years subject and educational pathways selection, including VET (Vocational and Education Training) programs are suggested to students so that their skills and qualifications are enhanced, making them more competitive in their chosen field.
Work Experience: Students are encouraged to gain practical experience through work experience, structured workplace learning, school-based apprenticeships, and traineeships. Real world and hands-on experience provide valuable insights into specific industries or profession. Rick Hager, the HeadStart Consultant for our Region works in close collaboration with the Seymour College careers staff and is situated in the career’s office of Seymour College.
Flexibility: The importance of adaptability, being open to exploring different pathways and contingency planning is encouraged, in case of unplanned setbacks and because sometimes, unexpected opportunities can lead to fulfilling careers.
Work-Life Balance: The importance of work-life balance and finding a career that allows individuals to maintain a healthy equilibrium between work and personal life is essential.
Long-Term Vision: All students are provided with the opportunity to think about their long-term goals and how their chosen career aligns with their lifestyle aspirations.
Learn from Others: Students recommended to talk to professionals working in their desired field. Insights from experienced individuals can provide valuable advice and realistic expectations.
Continuous Learning: At Seymour College we emphasize the importance of continuous learning through personal and professional development.
Set Goals: Goal setting is vital to maintain learning motivation, engagement, and purpose. At Seymour College we set short-term and long-term career goals and create regularly reviewed pathway action plans for each student.
