For almost a year, rumours have circulated around the region about Murchison’s Caledonian Hotel after its abrupt closure during the pandemic.

One was that concrete had been poured down the drainage system, another was that the whole bar was destroyed. Both rumours ended with “it will probably never open again”.
One month ago, James and Sandy Butcher decided to have a look for themselves. They are now the new lessees and are ready to set the record straight.
“We have had some plumbing issues but nothing to do with concrete,” Mr Butcher said.
“There isn’t much left of the bar but there is nothing that can’t be fixed.
“The main issue was termites.”
Mr Butcher, who has an extensive background in hospitality across the region, said they were ready for a new challenge and could see the need for the local pub to reopen.
“The town needs this pub up and running,” he said.
“Somewhere families can enjoy a meal and each other’s company.
“Hopefully it will also attract tourists and the wider community — Murchison is a great town.”
Mrs Butcher explained that the hotel would open in three stages, as they worked their way through reviving the building, which is over 150 years old.
“It’s a truly beautiful building and we want to showcase its authenticity,” she said.
“Showing off the stunning wooden floors, which will all be sanded and polished, the high architraves and every unique feature from the entry to the back gate.”
Pizza and pasta and café-style breakfasts headline a newly renovated back beer garden that is set to reopen in around two weeks, while the new lessees navigate their way through obtaining a liquor license.
Part of the first stage is also the accommodation on the top floor, which is currently being turned into a B&B that will operate under the hotel banner.
The second stage will open around two months after the first, and will see the kitchen and dining rooms transformed.
“The kitchen needs some love, but we will get there,” Mr Butcher said.
“I am going to hang fairy lights in the dining area and create a warm and welcoming space that can be enjoyed all year round,” Mrs Butcher said.
The final stage will have the bar back to its former beauty alongside a luxurious lounge area. Both Mr and Mrs Butcher hope that everyone who visits will enjoy what the hotel will have on offer.
“We still have a lot to do but Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was the Caledonian,” Mrs Butcher said.
