The club’s annual meeting is on in meeting room at Echuca library at 6pm where current members and interested community members are welcome.
Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organisation for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, with events and competitions in various events at local, state, national and international level occurring year round.
Participation in Special Olympics in the Loddon Campaspe region began when Joy Ready attended the Special Olympics Victoria Aquatic State Games in the early 1990’s.
By 2000, the Echuca branch had taken over the responsibility of the region and now, 25 years later, the branch is called Special Olympics Echuca with many athletes from the area representing Victoria and Australia at Special Olympics and World Games.
There will be a number of items on the agenda for the AGM, with the meeting including reports from the chair and treasurer of the club, membership and fundraising reports and sport reports on swimming, basketball, bocce, tenpin, golf and netball.
Special Olympics state manager for Victoria, James Hammond, emphasised the importance of getting fresh faces involved in a rewarding initiative.
“As we prepare for our annual general meeting, we’re calling on passionate community members to step up and make a real impact,” he said
“Our committee has been the backbone of our success, but with some members reaching their maximum term, it’s time for fresh faces to carry the torch.
“Whether you’re an athlete, a parent, or someone who believes in the power of inclusion and sport, we’d love for you to get involved.”
Special Olympics Victoria state chair John Elliott echoed Mr Hammond’s remarks, highlighting a desire for fresh voices at the club that have the opportunity to do a world of good.
“Our local club in Echuca is full of long-term volunteers that are absolutely committed to giving our athletes more opportunities to participate in sport,” he said.
“It feels like there will be a transition of volunteers, so I urge the local community to come along to the AGM and see what we are about.
“Inclusion helps everyone, not just our athletes.”
