SDHS celebrates Christmas following challenging few months

After a challenging year for many, the chance to catch up with friends and celebrate is a welcome reprieve.

The Seymour and District Historical Society celebrated Christmas with a lunch at The Brewer’s Table on Wednesday, December 14.

When the SDHS headquarters on Tallarook St were impacted by floods, the group, in an effort led by the Halpins, started the painstaking process of salvaging the handwritten documents that detail Seymour’s history.

Vice-president Anne Thompson presented bouquets of flowers to president Jeff Halpin and his wife and head researcher Nancy Halpin to thank them for their efforts.

Mrs Thompson said that now more than ever the group knew the importance of valuing history and keeping records safe.

“The Seymour and District Historical Society was so lucky to have so much wonderful community support in helping clean up after the floods, the place had to be totally evacuated,” Mrs Thompson said.

The society is currently in the process of digitising the town’s records, a task that has been significantly hindered by the floods.

If all goes to plan, the group hopes to be back in its Tallarook St headquarters in March.

The focus for the new year will be fundraising activities and grant applications to secure the funds needed to get the group back on its feet.

An annual general meeting will be held in early February to determine the direction of the group in the coming year.
