Local country sensations Sam & Sam will be making an appearance at the upcoming Kyabram Taste and Tunes event slated for Saturday, February 1.
From rocking stages with Aussie icons Thirsty Merc, The Veronicas and Birds of Tokyo to charming locals at cosy country pubs, Sam & Sam are thrilled to return to their regional roots.
Sitting down with the Free Press, Sam Ludeman - one half of the duo - said they were keen to get back to a place they know so well, having played their first gig at Flanagan’s Irish Bar in Shepparton over 20 years ago.
Mr Ludeman, who grew up between Echuca and Shepparton, said he was excited to play at Kyabram Taste and Tunes and see what it is all about.
“We’re super excited because we’ve got the four-piece band… we’ll play some of our originals and a lot of covers,” he said.
“It should be a good day.”
Sam & Sam's fan base skyrocketed during COVID-19 as they connected with audiences through live-streamed performances, bringing joy to homes during lockdowns.
Their online gigs attracted an impressive 20,000 to 50,000 viewers each, with the entire series racking up a staggering 5.2 million views on YouTube.
Since then, they have returned to doing they know best – live performances.
This will be their first time performing in Kyabram; however, they are known around the Goulburn Valley and frequent regional towns for performances.
“I’d say 90 per cent of our ticketed events are smaller regional towns where we get to bring our shows to kind of smaller places that might not get as much live music,” Mr Ludeman said.
“People are obviously wanting to see live music in those regional towns, and they come out in droves to support us – it’s actually a focus of our business to get to as many regional towns as we can each year.”
While the country duo will be on stage for the end of the night, they hope to get out and explore the ‘Taste’ side of Taste and Tunes.
“We’ll be providing the tunes, so I’m excited to taste the barbecue and all of the food on offer,” Mr Ludeman said.
What they want to eat aside, he said they were gearing up a set list filled to the brim with crowd favourites.
“(The crowd) always pick up when we sing Wagon Wheel (by Old Crow Medicine Show), Chicken Fried (by Zac Brown Band) or Paul Kelly… and then our song The River – which is probably our most popular song about the mighty Murray River... they are songs that we notice really work in the regional towns,” he said.
Come February 1, Sam & Sam promise a night of non-stop dancing and unforgettable memories, where the only complaint will be sore feet from all the fun.
“We have a bunch of originals and we’ve learned a bunch of new stuff - and then we’ll play what we call pub favourites,” he said.
“It’s a friendly show, so we love to get everyone grooving, vibing and having a good time.”
Joining the set list of talent to keep attendees grooving throughout the evening will be local talent Indi Gilmore and covers band Stumbling North - both favourites from last year’s event and guaranteed to make 2025 special as well.
