SAM will be the only Victorian venue to host the Art Gallery of NSW’s touring exhibition, Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio, on its national tour.
The exhibition, opening on June 28, 2025, will give audiences an insight into the studio practice of one of the nation’s most gifted and revered artists.
Combining collections from the Art Gallery of NSW and Brett Whiteley’s studio in Sydney, the exhibition will showcase various media, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and ceramics.
Some of Whiteley’s most iconic works will be on display as well, including The balcony 2, 1975, and Self portrait in the studio, 1976, alongside early abstract works made in London and New York in the 1960s, and works from Whiteley’s final series, Paris ‘Regard de Côté’.
SAM artistic director Danny Lacy said the museum was thrilled to be presenting this exhibition in regional Victoria.
“Our visitors will be awed by the scale of Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio; the sheer volume of Whiteley’s many iconic works, paired with illuminating behind-the-scenes photos, lay bare the passion and creative drive of one of Australia’s most significant artists,” he said.
Also coming next year is artist Belinda Fox’s ceramics, Vipoo Srivilasa will feature in the showcases, Kerrie Poliness will take over the level four Art Wall, with more artists to feature throughout the year.
Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio will be showcased in SAM’s Lin Onus Gallery from June 28, 2025 until August 31, 2025.
