Zachary Watt, 24, of Mooroopna, pleaded guilty to drug- and drink-driving, and not wearing a helmet.
Leading Senior Constable Chris Cole said Watt was riding an e-scooter in the Melbourne suburb of Chelsea when he crashed into a parked car on November 30, 2023.
He was bleeding from the head when police arrived after the crash, as he was not wearing a helmet.
A blood sample taken after the crash found he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.171, and it also tested positive for cannabis.
When he was interviewed in July this year, Watt told police “All I can remember is riding to the supermarket to get dinner, and I checked my phone”, Leading Sen Constable Cole said.
He also told police he would have been doing 25km/h, which is the maximum speed the e-scooter can do.
The court heard Watt also told police in June he had drunk two or three cans of Bundaberg Rum that day, with his last drink 30 minutes before the collision, and that he “smoked weed to get to sleep”.
Representing himself in court, Watt said he did not have a driver’s licence after losing it in 2019 for unlicensed driving and never applying to get it back.
Magistrate Simon Zebrowski fined Watt $800.
He was also disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence for 24 months.
“There’s a combination of stupid things there — drinking, wearing no helmet and checking your phone,” Mr Zebrowski said.
“You’re lucky to be alive.”
