An appeal for cash or lightweight clothing to assist the people of Darwin who lost all or most of their possessions and were made homeless by Cyclone Tracey has been opened by the Echuca branch of Red Cross.
An appeal centre has been opened at Staw’s Store in Hare St, Echuca, and the president of the Murray Valley regional of Red Cross, Mrs Harry Fraser said this morning there has already been a good response to the effort.

Residents and traders of Tongala are fed up and disappointed with the continuing vandalism within the town.
Several businesses have been targeted by the vandals, but locals are remaining positive in the fight against the vandals.
The Tongala and District Community Advisory Group is concerned that the vandalism problem is getting out of hand.
CAG president Murray Ross said that CAG is donating money to the Tongala Traders to help with the installation of surveillance cameras throughout the town’s business district.

While most teenage girls choose to play netball, basketball, tennis or soccer, Echuca’s Abbey Moss takes part in rodeos.
It’s a dangerous sport with risk involved, but that doesn’t deter the 17-year-old Echuca College student.
A dramatic fall during a competition two years ago set her back a notch, but since then, Moss has been making waves in the Australian Professional Rodeo and Australian Barrel Horse associations.
‘‘He (her horse) slipped going around a barrel, and he fell on top of me,’’ she said.

Echuca paramedic Ian Wines felt there was ‘‘a big sense of relief for all of us’’ when one of the longest industrial campaigns in Victorian history came to an end on Saturday.
After more than two years of negotiations, the agreement includes a $3000 sign-on bonus and a 6 per cent pay increase from Wednesday, followed by a further 3 per cent increases in July and then again in July 2016.
‘‘It has been a long process and a very stressful one,’’ Mr Wines said.
