Volunteers will be set up at six locations across Shepparton and Mooroopna, including Fairley’s IGA, Riverside Plaza, Shepparton Marketplace, Aldi in both Shepparton and Mooroopna and Bunnings Warehouse in the lead-up to the Red Shield Appeal, which will be held on the weekend of May 28 and 29.
Salvation Army Shepparton captain Karyn Wishart said all the funds collected at the static points around Shepparton and Mooroopna would stay in the area and help fund local programs.
Ms Wishart said some of the money would go towards helping the Shepparton toy drive at the end of the year, as well as helping fund community programs.
“It assists us with regular community programs like our community meal, which goes on here, our alcohol and other drugs, which is the therapeutic day rehabilitation,” she said.
“A lot of the funds help us in emergency situations to help people who have struck hard times and might need a bed for the night and for people impacted through domestic violence.”
While the Salvos’ online appeal did funnel money back into the city, Ms Wishart said the best way to support the local chapter was to drop cash into the donation tins.
“If people really want to make sure that the funds stay local, and are used local, they can come in here and the money will be assured that it be used locally, as well as if they donate at our Mooroopna thrift shop,” Ms Wishart said.
People wishing to volunteer are encouraged to call the Salvation Army on 5821 2666, while donations can also be handed in to the Orr St headquarters.
“There are a lot of places we need to cover, so more people helping would be really good,” Ms Wishart said.
