Designed to cater to cycling enthusiasts of all ages, the track promises to be an exciting addition to the town’s recreational offerings.
Residents, Peter and Pauline Dickens, made the journey from nearby Corowa, inspired by their young granddaughters Ivy and Zoe Collins, who were keen to explore the new track with their bicycles.
The enthusiasm of these young girls played a big part in encouraging their grandparents to let them experience this exciting new outdoor activity.
"The pump track looks absolutely wonderful," Mrs Dickens remarked enthusiastically. "It’s heartening to witness such progress in our local communities. While Corowa boasts a skateboard park, this new pump track is truly spectacular and will be fantastic for the children of Wahgunyah and the surrounding areas."
Ivy Collins shared her impressions with the Free Press after her initial ride on the track; "It’s fun and a bit scary, especially if it’s your first time," she said.
In addition to the local youngsters, boys from Corowa were spotted enjoying the track as well, all expressing positive feedback and delight in using this new facility.
A pump track is a specially designed circuit featuring rollers, banked turns, and other features intended for cyclists to navigate using momentum generated by body movements, rather than constant peddling. Originating in the mountain biking and BMX scenes, modern pump tracks now accommodate skateboarding and are wheelchair accessible, utilising durable materials such as concrete and asphalt.
The track’s appeal lies in its simplicity and inclusivity, welcoming riders of various skill levels to enjoy the thrill of riding without the need for complex technical manoeuvres.
A grand opening event was organised by the Wahgunyah Progress Society on Sunday, July 21.
With its broad appeal and community-driven spirit, the pump track is already become a popular destination for outdoor bike riding enthusiasts across the region.
The Wahgunyah Railway Pump Track is located at the Railway Reserve on Victoria Street in Wahgunyah.
