The visual impact of a home, its landscaping and laundry design were under scrutiny last month before approval was given for alterations and additions to two transportable buildings in Mulwala.
Federation Council approved the buildings for use as a dual occupancy on a vacant lot at 79 Hume Street, subject to 39 conditions.
The application had been recommended for refusal by council’s planning director Susan Appleyard as it was deemed inconsistent with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
Ms Appleyard said the development did not promote good design or provide suitable amenity for future residents and neighbouring properties.
The prefabricated construction and landscaping attracted most discussion, led by Mulwala councillor, Andrew Kennedy.
“What is a good design?” Cr Kennedy asked.
“We’re talking affordable housing… this is a no brainer.
“The building is transportable; in years to come it can be moved away.”
Councillors generally agreed there was a need for portable housing for worker accommodation.
After much discussion, the list of conditions was issued and the application was unanimously approved.
