With any sort of party comes responsibilities to be safe and to make sure everyone around you is safe — and that includes on our roads.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said that while officers would encourage everyone to have a good time, police also wanted revellers to be safe and plan their night.
“Take your ID, phone and enough money for food and transport,” the spokesperson said.
“Make sure you have a designated driver or safe transport to and from the venue before leaving.
“Drink safely and within your limits and remember to look after your friends. Stay alert and walk with others in well-lit areas.
“You are more vulnerable to violence and accidents when you’ve had too much to drink.”
When planning a celebration, remember:
- Alcohol affects everybody differently, so get to know your personal limits and stick to them. Save yourself from regrets, and remember that how much you drink is up to you.
- Eat substantial food before and while drinking alcohol, and drink water throughout the night.
- Never mix alcohol and drugs and never accept a drink you haven’t seen the bar staff pour or you haven’t opened yourself.
- Don’t leave drinks unattended, and keep an eye on your friend’s drink as well. Remember that soft drinks can be spiked.
“Staying together and looking after one another is one of the best ways to stay safe,” the spokesperson said.
“Stop your friends from getting into fights. Always walk away from dangerous or conflict situations, and take your friends with you.
“Don’t leave friends alone with somebody they’ve just met, and recognise when your friend has had too much to drink. Encourage them to call it a night and go home.
“And most importantly, never leave someone who is drunk or passed out — get them immediate medical help.”
By looking out for each other and taking simple precautions, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable night out for you and your friends.
