Prof Twomey said they were seeing an influenza resurgence after suppressed case numbers last year due to lockdowns and isolation.
“Many people fail to recognise how dangerous the flu is,’’ he said.
“However, getting vaccinated is the way to protect yourself and your community.’’
Prof Twomey encouraged community members to get a flu vaccine at a pharmacy, as pharmacists were highly accessible.
“You can be confident in your local community pharmacists’ skills and ability,’’ he said.
“Pharmacists can vaccinate people across a wide range of ages, from children to elderly adults.
“More than 72 per cent of those based in regional areas live within 2.5km of a pharmacy so they are really convenient and easy to get to for most people.”

The symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu (influenza) are very similar, but everyone is advised to watch out for:
- loss or change in smell or taste;
- fever, chills, or sweats;
- cough and sore throat;
- shortness of breath; and
- runny nose.
People might also experience headaches, muscle soreness, stuffy nose, nausea and vomiting.
To avoid catching the flu, cough and sneeze into your elbow and wash your hands thoroughly and regularly.
If you become unwell, rest at home and avoid going out, wear a mask if necessary.
A pharmacist can give advice on managing common flu symptoms; if more serious symptoms were present, seek medical attention.
