Greater Shepparton City Council voted on Tuesday to amend its orders under Section 26 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994.
The legislation allows councils to create orders that require a dog to be kept under control in public places and reserves, but also to exempt specific areas.
“We have to do this by law because we have recently completed the dog park,” Cr Fern Summer told the special council meeting.
Cr Summer made reference to the fact that dog owners had been quick to embrace the new park, complete with a separate dog run for socialising and agility equipment.
“I’m aware it is open and there are probably dogs off the leash already, but we are seeking to rectify this (law) as quickly as possible,” Cr Summer said.
Cr Anthony Brophy said the change would simply formalise the council’s intention for the park to be a place for dogs to run free and exercise.
“I’ve been down there myself and had a look at it. It is very well patronised, very well supported,” he said.
“There’s tails wagging galore, so obviously everyone is very happy with it.”
Cr Sam Spinks said the popularity indicated potential for more dog parks in the municipality.
“It is really impressive and I think all the dogs are going to have a wonderful time, as well as their owners,” Cr Spinks said.
The exemption doesn’t become official until it is published in the government gazette.
