A food and volunteer drive is being launched today for the Community Pantry, an initiative of the Deniliquin Salvation Army and Rotary Club of Deniliquin.
The pantry has been operating from the Salvation Army Church since 2023, and Salvos community engagement officer Sandra Whyborn said people can help in a few ways.
“We are calling on the local community to give a hand, or a can of food,” she said.
“It would be great to see our community get on board with donating items to the pantry.
“When you do your groceries, grab an extra tin of something, or a toothbrush and bar of soap, for someone in need.
“Recommended items include non-perishable food such as pasta, pasta sauces, tinned food, cereal, UHT milk, dry biscuits, spreads, toiletries and shareable items, such as multipack muesli bars or instant noodles.
“We want to support our community, and we invite you to partner with us, to support one another, particularly those doing it tough.”
Pantry volunteers will be at Coles supermarket this Saturday from 7am to 1pm collecting items from donors.
A second drive will be hosted at Ritchies IGA on Saturday, March 29 from 8am to 1pm.
Items can also be dropped off at the Salvation Army Church any Thursday from 10am to 1pm.
The Community Pantry was established to support families and individuals struggling to make ends meet, amidst the cost of living crisis.
Ms Whyborn said anyone is welcome to utilise the pantry, from which you can buy staple items cheaper than at the supermarkets.
“Everyone is welcome, whatever your financial situation. No proof of income is required because we believe that noone should be going hungry today,” Ms Whyborn said.
“We encourage people to take what they need and give what they can.
“All monetary donations go back to the pantry to purchase more items for the shelves.
“The Community Pantry thanks the people of Deniliquin who have supported us with donations of food, fresh veggies, fruit and money, but we are now calling for additional support.
“We currently purchase items from Foodbank. However, the cost of items has increased, and we are now seeking help to help us help others within our community.”
