The annual safety training exercise, organised by the Minerals Council of Australia, brings together mine rescue and emergency response teams from Victoria and NSW to compete in simulated emergencies.
Teams participated in eight scenario-based challenges including firefighting, first aid, underground search and rescue, and ropes exercises.
Oscar 1 claimed victory in the fire exercise scenario and placed third in the breathing apparatus exercise.
First Lieutenant Karl Shay said the competitive spirit of participating teams was great to see.
“It was an excellent weekend,” Mr Shay said.
“You get six months of training in just one weekend.”
The team members’ skills were put to immediate use when they received an emergency call.
“On the Friday night, our crew actually got a call-out to a job with a man stuck down a mine shaft, so it was a great chance to use our skills and assist them to safety,” Mr Shay said.
Oscar 1 team member Tom Heather said the competition was collaborative in nature.
“It puts us head-to-head, but we treat it like real-life training,” Mr Heather said.
“I am definitely proud to be part of CFA and to show people what we can do and what we are here for.”
Oscar 1 member Darcy McClure-Wallace won the overall individual skills category and was part of Foster Gold Mine’s overall team victory, competing as part of the Central Victorian Mutual Aid team.
