Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell has announced that $112,500 will be given to Nurmurkah as part of the Nurmurkah Flood Mitigation Project's stage two southern levee design.

The funding is part of a $3.5 million initial funding package delivered to Nicholls through the Federal Government’s Disaster Ready Fund, which is aimed at ensuring the region can survive future flooding.

The DRF is providing up to $1 billion over the next five years to better prepare Australian communities for future natural disasters.

According to Mr Birrell, the first round of the DRF will be used to assess how local communities have coped with disasters in the past and build a foundation of knowledge for developing projects to protect communities and critical infrastructure.

“In October last year, the region was hit by unprecedented flooding and, while communities are still recovering, work has already started on identifying works that could be done to mitigate future floods,” he said.

“In order to seek funding in future rounds, we first have to understand the problems and the best solutions to put forward.”

Mr Birrell vowed to continue fighting for the region to have its fair share of funding.

“I continue to have regular discussions with government ministers about what will be required to better protect our communities in future,” he said.
