In a recent study by Remitly, a digital money transfer service, Shepparton achieved an impressive score of 57 out of 100 in its Coffee Capitals index, ranking it fifth among the best coffee capitals in the nation.
Remitly’s Ryan Riley praised the region’s vibrant coffee scene, noting the advantages beyond just enjoying an exceptional cup of joe.
“Coffee shops here aren’t just about getting a caffeine hit, they allow connection to a community and are just one part of what it means to live life as an Aussie,” he said.
“We hope our data will help inspire people to explore the best coffee shops in their area, especially independents that might need some extra support this summer.”
The study analysed over 2.37 million customer reviews on Google Maps and over 4000 Instagram posts to determine the top destinations for coffee lovers nationwide.
All data was adjusted for city population sizes and scaled to a 100-point system, offering a comprehensive view of Australia’s top coffee hotspots based on coffee shops per person, customer ratings, reviews and Instagram posts.
Coffs Harbour ranks first with a score of 66.4 out of 100, with its popular coffee shops and speciality roasters earning an average customer rating of 4.23 out of five.
The Gold Coast follows in second place with a score of 60.7 out of 100, offering 379 coffee shops dotted around the region for its 645,000 residents.
Cairns and the Sunshine Coast are next, with scores of 60.5 and 57.2 out of 100, respectively.
Melbourne, often regarded by locals as home to the best coffee in Australia, ranks sixth with a final score just shy of 55 out of 100.
Although it holds a lower ranking, Melbourne will surely perk up knowing it boasts an average coffee shop rating of 4.37 and continues to uphold its reputation as a global coffee destination.
Other cities making the top 10 include Mildura in seventh, Brisbane in eighth and Adelaide in ninth.
Interestingly, Shepparton outranked another major city – Sydney.
Despite being known for its coffee culture, Sydney missed out on a top-five position, ranking in 10th position overall with a score of 46.5 out of 100.
This research is promising for residents of all the cities mentioned and encourages everyone to stop and smell the coffee, particularly the people of Shepparton.
Whether a café owner, a barista or a consumer, locals can froth with pride knowing they are being served some of the finest freshly brewed coffee in the country.
