Councillors this week voted to rename the entire reserve area to the ‘North Deniliquin Reserve’.
Within it, new names will be adopted for both the parkland and the parking bay.
The area which incorporates the newly constructed landscaped park, its toilet facilities and car park will be named ‘Flo Allen Park’.
A formal name for the parking bay area, which incorporates the Deniliquin & District Transport Wall of Fame and memorial wall, is yet to be decided.
Council has agreed to go back to the community to find something suitable.
A previous suggestion to call the area the 'The Transport Legends Truck Stop' is expected to be considered along with any new suggestions.
The naming of Flo Allen Park pays tribute to one of the long-serving members of the former North Deniliquin Tennis Club.
It also recognises that the park was built on the site which once housed the club’s clay courts and clubrooms.
“Council has received advice that Mrs Allen's association with the North Deniliquin tennis courts stretches over 20 years and was considered significant for the area and tennis in Deniliquin,” council director infrastructure Mark Dalzell said in his report.
“Based on this information it is considered appropriate that the 'Flo Allen Park' name is used.
“This provides respectful acknowledgement of Mrs Allen's contributions to the North Deniliquin Tennis Club over the years.
“The Geographical Names Board of NSW provides advice that personal names may be used for reserves where the person or persons have had a long-term association with the area or have made a significant contribution to the area of the proposed park or reserve.
“This association or contribution may include: two or more terms of office on the governing local government council; 20 or more years of association with a local community group or service club; or 20 or more years of association or service with a local or state government or organisation.”
Mr Dalzell said the community will be asked for input on the naming of the parking bay section of the reserve.
He said council would also need to investigate specific meanings and definitions of both ‘rest stop’ and ‘truck stop’ before any new name is adopted.
The cost of providing signage at the reserve, including interpretive signage on Mrs Allen, will be funded from council’s operation budget.
