At the start of 2017, Mr Maher moved to Shepparton from Bacchus Marsh to take up a position as a sports cadet with The News.
“Tyler’s rapid rise in the newsroom is a credit to him,” McPherson Media Group content and audience director Christine Anderson said.
“Since he commenced with the group Tyler has shown the qualities we require to continue to evolve as a media company in the changing landscape of regional news.
“In the past he played a key role in the Foxy and JR Footy Show and currently co-ordinates a podcast, After the Jack, which is an informal, engaging discussion about Goulburn Valley bowls action.”
Over the past decade the delivery of news to the community has changed considerably, and the editor is now required to think of two audience groups – print readers and the growing number of digital consumers.
“Tyler has a good grasp of the expectations of both our audiences – print and online,” Ms Anderson said.
“He showed while managing the sports department that he had the ability to provide the same quality of content to our audience in print that The News has delivered for more than 150 years, while still bringing creative ideas to life for the digital audience.”
Mr Maher met his partner, Grace, shortly before moving to Shepparton. They now have two daughters, Eden and Bonnie.
“I do feel a part of the community; I think children make you feel that way,” Mr Maher said.
“They also make you think about where you live, and question how you can contribute to the success and wellbeing of the community.
“Taking on this role will give me the opportunity to make a difference for residents of Shepparton and surrounding towns.
“I want to hear the good and bad about our region, give readers a place to voice their thoughts and opinions, and advocate for our residents – whether that’s about a dangerous stretch of road or the need for quality affordable housing.
“I hope to play a part in the Goulburn Valley’s continual growth.
“Even more importantly I want to contribute to the historical record of our region, so in the future my girls will be able to research their home town and learn about the people who lived here, and the challenges and successes that were faced along the way.”
