The Bushrangers allowed the Pioneers to gain ascendency of the match by letting through four goals to one in the opening half.
Despite the contest being a tight affair in the first quarter, Bendigo's attack on the ball in the second term helped widen the gap to 16 points at the main break.
Murray's inaccuracy in front of the big sticks — four points in the second quarter — didn't help its cause.
However, the Bushies recorded a spirited performance in the second half as they got accustomed to the heat of the battle after a lengthy time off.
“It was a disappointing final result, but I was really happy with how we finished the match,” Bushrangers assistant coach Mario de Santa-ana said.
“We just started a bit slow, Bendigo were that little bit more prepared. They played in front and I thought we lacked pace.
“But after half-time we got better, so it was a case of getting back into the swing of things.”
Shepparton United playmaker Aurora Smith was a shining light in the loss for the Bushies.
The winger racked up 16 disposals — seven contested — and seven inside 50s, while United teammate and Finley product Lily Sharp finished with 15 touches on the forward flank.
“Aurora was very impressive. I thought she played her role to perfection,” de Santa-ana said.
“She would have racked up plenty of metres gained, the way she used her run and carry was great.
“Lily Sharp was probably our most dangerous forward on the day. Even though she didn't kick a goal, she was very lively with her leads and marking.
“And Molly Kennedy was reliable all day in defence and in the midfield, while Maddy Gray was super competitive.”
● The Bushrangers return to the field this weekend when they take on Geelong Falcons.
