Of the 26 players selected for the NAB competition, 14 represent the Goulburn Valley region, in what is a great indication of the talent rising up through the ranks.
Among the squad members are Mooroopna’s Achaung Agog, Nathan Basil, Tom Brown, Kaedyn Napier and Shepparton Notre’s Jayden Dhosi, Drew Docking, Connor Fleming and Max Hendy.
Joining them are Shepparton Swans Diesal Batey and Joshua Rachele, Tatura’s George Brisbane, Numurkah’s Rhys Cason, Katunga’s Max Hendy and United’s Bowen Calogera.
Coach Justin McMahon revealed the extensive process to narrow down to a squad of 26 players.
‘‘The series of training sessions, trial games and athletic tests allowed the Murray Bushrangers coaching staff to select the players they think are best suited to perform well at the NAB League under-16 level,” McMahon said.
He recognised the unlucky players to miss out this year, but he raised the pathway of ex-AFL superstar and former Bushranger Steve Johnson.
‘‘The selection process is very subjective and there are many examples of players such as Steve Johnson, who missed stages of Murray Bushrangers selection,’’ he said.
‘‘We just encourage those boys to continue their dedication and commitment to playing well for their home club.’’
Talent manager Mick Wilson also reiterated it was not the end of their journey as professional footballers.
‘‘While there were some disappointed players, each of these players are well prepared for the upcoming season where we will continue to monitor their development,’’ Wilson said.
‘‘History suggests that a number of these players will develop and come into squads either throughout the season or in coming years.’’
McMahon highlighted the importance of local clubs throughout the region, acknowledging the work done by many volunteers.
‘‘We really value the incredible support from junior and senior clubs across the whole region,’’ McMahon said.
‘‘(The) volunteers and coaches are so essential in providing a platform for young players to develop as quality people and in pursuing an elite AFL pathway.’’
The season kicks off against Gippsland Power at Punt Road on Saturday, March 23.
