As part of Operation Solo Safe, police will promote conversations around the four pillars of safe road use: impairment, distraction, speed and vehicle safety.
The main driver behind the operation is a rapid rise in the number of motorcycle-related fatalities on Moira Shire roads last year, Cobram Highway Patrol Sergeant Bill Dockrey said.
He said the operation would form part of the Cobram unit’s neighbourhood policing program to provide a safe environment for all motorists.
“We want everyone to get home safely,” Sgt Dockrey said.
The public may see highway patrol officers conducting intercepts on motorcycles across Moira Shire.
“Although the program is focused on a particular area of road use, the same responsibilities apply to all road users,” Sgt Dockrey said.
Operation Solo Safe began in January and will finish at the end of April.
The latest data from the Transport Accident Commission shows that since January 1, at least five motorcyclists have lost their lives on Victorian roads.
TAC data also shows that regional Victoria is over-represented in motorcycle rider fatalities.
In the past five years, over four in 10 motorcycle rider fatalities occurred outside major urban centres, despite regional Victoria having just a quarter of the state’s population.
