Million-dollar approach to Shepparton’s sports precinct to have shared path upgrade

A cycling path that stops part way along Packham St in Shepparton will be extended as part of a $1.1 million upgrade of the street, which is one of the main access points to the Shepparton Sports Precinct.

Cleaves Earthmoving and Drainage Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract for the works which include kerb, channel and footpaths as a reconfiguration of an existing shared path.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s cycling strategy nominated Packham St as part of the Strategic Cycling Corridor and a shared path was constructed along the southern end in 2019-20.

As part of the overall upgrade of the streetscape, bicycle lanes will be extended for the remainder of the street through to the sports complex.

Cr Seema Abdullah moved the motion to accept the tender.

“This is a project that has been advocated for by Cr Fern Summer; I’m very pleased to see this is happening,” she said.

“This upgrade will provide a dedicated bike path for the remainder of the street.”

Cr Shane Sali commended Cr Summer for pushing for the shared path to be extended, and said it was a shame she wasn’t there for the decision after earlier being excused from the meeting.

“It is a shame Cr Summer felt the need to leave the room,” he said.
