Man charged over Nazi graffiti

A Shepparton man has been charged under Victorian laws that outlaw the use of Nazi symbols.

The 37-year-old allegedly painted Nazi swastikas at the entry to both the Shepparton courthouse and the police station, which are on the same block.

Police said the man was stopped shortly after allegedly painting the graffiti, as he was seen on CCTV outside the police station.

While it is alleged the graffiti was done about 7.30pm on September 20, the man was only charged on summons recently.

He has been charged with two counts of intentionally displaying a Nazi symbol and two counts of marking offensive graffiti.

The man was charged under legislation enacted on December 29 last year that prohibits the use of Nazi symbols.

That legislation was added to on October 21 with additional laws that prohibit displays or performances of Nazi salutes.
