Barooga drowning
Emergency services were called to the Murray River at the end of Micks Beach Rd, Barooga, following reports of a man having difficulty in the water at about 12.30pm on Friday, January 24.
A short time later, NSW police officers attached to Murray River Police District responded, with assistance from Victoria Police, Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue NSW and the SES.
Emergency services, including Marine Rescue Moama branch volunteers, searched the river for the 23 year-old Victorian man on Friday afternoon, before resuming the search again on Saturday morning.
The body of a man was located in the water at about 11.45am on Saturday.
While it was yet to be formally identified, the body was believed to be that of the missing man.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The death is the third one along the Murray River this year, following the deaths of Nathan Taylor, 23, at Moama, and a 54 year-old man at Mildura earlier in the month.
New contractors set to take over
Greater Shepparton City Council has announced a new waste contract will begin on Feburary 1, with new contractors in charge but no changes or impacts to residents’ bin collection schedules.
The new contract with Foott, Biomix and Cleanaway will replace the one with Veolia and Western Composting Technology.
After the contract was awarded originally to Wheelie Waste, since Veolia took over operations in 2019, there have been 10 million bin collections across Greater Shepparton, about 50,000 tonnes of food organics and garden organics diverted from landfill and about 30,000 tonnes of recyclable items recovered and recycled.
Since the introduction of food organics to the green-lid bin in 2015, Western Composting has processed and diverted about 100,000 tonnes of food organics and garden organics from landfill.
Council manager resource recovery Liam Moller thanked both businesses for their contributions in improving the region’s resource recovery.
“We would like to recognise and thank both Veolia and Western Composting for their service to council and our residents,” he said.
2025 Pioneers taking shape
The Bendigo Pioneers 2025 under-16 and under-18 lists are starting to take shape.
Both girls’ sides released final squad lists on January 17, while the under-18 boys announced a larger pool of talent headed on to phase two.
There are plenty of local names one step closer to suiting up for the Pioneers this year.
Boasting one of the richest junior talent pools in the region of the last few years, it’s no surprise to see seven Murray Bombers among the 57 boys to progress to phase two of the under-18 boys selection.
