Laptops donated by Shepparton businesses are helping at-risk students get the most out of their education.

Goulburn-Murray Water, Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project, Goulburn Valley Water, Data Parts and Advance Computing have partnered to donate 70 laptops to members of the Greater Shepparton community as part of the Laptops with Love project.

Launched in December 2021, the project has provided 15 primary school students, 21 secondary school students and 34 TAFE or university students with the technology they need to complete their studies.

The water authorities donate their ‘retired’ laptops and Data Parts and Advance Computing then clean and prepare them at no cost.

G-MW information technology manager Peter Holland said he was pleased with the project’s success.

“It is a project that is making a real difference. Being able to give people the opportunity to continue their studies is special, and this project has now given that opportunity to 70 community members,” he said.

“There are still more laptops to give as well, so it is exciting to know the project will help more people yet.”

Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project executive officer Amy Robinson said the project helped the region in numerous ways.

“The tangible impact that Laptops with Love is making within our community is incredible,” she said.

“At Lighthouse we connect young people to opportunities and resources that will better their outcomes.

“The environmental impact of upcycling these devices is the silver lining of this entrepreneurial and clever local solution.”
