It is mid-November, and the elves at the Kyabram Lions have already begun stocking shelves of stores with their iconic Christmas cake.
While the Christmas cake itself is sweet, the impact it’s purchase makes on the Kyabram community is even sweeter.
With flood and bushfire season right around the corner, chairman of Kyabram Lions, David Livsey said that the money made from the fruit cakes will especially go towards communities affected by future natural disasters.
All proceeds of one of the Lions Club Christmas cakes goes back to the Kyabram Lions themselves who take the money and put it towards disaster relief, childhood cancer research, and local schools and organisations across the community who need help across the year.
A classic at any Christmas function, the Kyabram Lions Club Christmas cake is made in Victoria from 50 per cent fruit and “top-notch natural ingredients” according to Mr Livsey.
Rob Oerlemans, chief executive of Lions Australia, said the cake has been a tradition for Lions Clubs for the nearly six decades.
“Our Lions Christmas cakes have not only been proudly Australian-made, but their impact has been immeasurable,” he said.
The iconic Christmas cakes are available to purchase a fruit cake or pudding for $16 from the following Kyabram outlets: Fitzgeralds Farm Fresh Meats, Goulburn Murray Credit Union, Bendigo Bank and Albion Fruit and Vegetables.
