The council has accepted a recommendation that it notes the advice from the Heritage Advisory Committee regarding a commemorative sign for Lemnos to acknowledge the relevance of the Lemnos name and its connection to the Gallipoli campaign.
It was also recommended that a commemorative sign project would be considered in the 2025-26 capital budget process, with a $10,000 budget estimated.
The motion was brought forward by Cr Dinny Adem and seconded by Cr Anthony Brophy during the August council meeting.
Cr Adem said acknowledging the area’s significance was a top priority.
“It was a soldiers’ settlement,” he said.
“It (Lemnos) featured dramatically in the Gallipoli campaign.
“I’m looking forward to the day we get something set up.”
Mayor Shane Sali said the connection between Australia’s war history and Lemnos was significant and unique to the region.
“It's really sort of unknown what will be achieved with the $10,000 that's been put in the budget, but we spoke about the connection to Lemnos and the connection to the war and what that means to our region,” Cr Sali said.
“The funding is basically to identify what can be done, and where can it go?
“It's a small amount, but that can be something that can at least start it and get things going, and I'm sure that the community of Lemnos will be really happy.”
