Shepparton teenagers will get access to online learner permit tests by the end of June, as Victoria moves to avoid a repeat of the delays caused by the pandemic last year.

One thousand extra prospective learners each week with existing test appointments are currently being invited to sign up and complete the test online, but only those with appointments at VicRoads offices in Gippsland, Mooroolbark, Sunbury, Colac, Kyneton, Dromana and Sunshine.
Melbourne’s CBD, Ballarat and Hoppers Crossing will be added to the trial next week before all prospective learners across Victoria are able to sign up online by the end of June.
The new test takes learners through a course that includes a mix of theory, interactive videos and visual graphics before the final assessment, reinforcing key road safety messages with mini-quizzes to progressively test the learners’ knowledge in modules such as speed, drink and drug driving, seatbelts, fatigue, distractions and road rules.
The entire course and test will take between four and six hours to complete, with prospective learners having 12 months to sit and pass the online test once they have registered.
Learner drivers will still need to attend a VicRoads customer service centre to confirm their identity, have their photo taken and complete an eyesight check — but this process does not require an appointment.
“We’re excited to keep rolling out the new online learner test, helping the next generation of Victorian drivers boost their knowledge of key road safety rules before they get behind the wheel,” Victorian Roads Minister Ben Carroll said.
