Year 6 students with various leadership positions at their respective schools spent the day listening to a range of guest speakers designed to inspire the students as they enter their final year of primary school.
Students visited from Nagambie’s St Joseph’s Primary School, Shepparton’s St Brendan’s Primary School, St Mel’s Primary School and St Luke’s Primary School, Tongala’s St Patrick’s Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School in Numurkah, St Augustine’s College in Kyabram, Rushworth’s St Mary’s Primary School, Nathalia’s St Francis Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School in Cobram and Sacred Heart School in Tatura.
St Mary’s School Mooroopna principal Anthony Butts said the leadership day was about sharing inspiring stories but also having some fun.
‘‘The whole day is aimed to motivate our Grade 6 students to understand that we can all be leaders,’’ he said.
‘‘We can all be role models at school and have an impact on the rest of the school students as well as in their communities.
‘‘The day is a lot about aspiration and assisting the kids to believe in their dreams.’’
The students heard from a range of speakers including the school captains from Shepparton’s Notre Dame College, St Augustine’s College Kyabram and St Mary of the Angels Secondary College in Nathalia.
Guest speakers included Catholic Education Sandhurst deputy director Cath Dillon, 2016 Victorian Young Achievers Award winner Fablice Manirakiza, who spoke openly about his personal experience as a refugee from Burundi in Africa, and former Australian netball captain Bianca Chatfield who discussed the importance of taking risks, giving things a go and staying positive.
The event concluded with a visit from Fr Rob Galea, who shared his views on leadership through music and activities.
He also offered the children some practical tips on overcoming fear.
‘‘Leadership is part of our human nature, we are called to lead and also to lead ourselves to become better,’’ he said.
