Disaster Legal Help Victoria and consumer lawyer and advocate Denis Nelthorpe will be running the ‘Worried about the impact of disasters? Plan ahead with disaster legal advice’ event to help people to identify how the law can help them if they are impacted by another disaster and mitigate the impacts of these disasters. Attendees will also receive information on where to find legal help in the Goulburn Valley.
Victorian Law Foundation executive director Lynne Haultain said that while Law Week was a national initiative, Victoria had the biggest program by far.
“We have well over 200 events this year across the state, which are very strongly supported in the regions,” she said.
“The Goulburn Valley is particularly impressive; your libraries are incredibly active during Law Week this year, as they have been in previous years.”
Victorian Law Week is held from May 15 to 21, with several free events being held at Shepparton Library as part of the program. The disaster legal advice event, for example, will take place on May 18 from 8pm to 9pm.
“In Shepparton, we’ve spent a bit of time ensuring that there are events around disaster response, particularly,” she said.
“We've got two events being run by Dennis Nelthorpe, who’s extremely well experienced in this world and also through Disaster Legal Help Victoria, to try and help people get ahead of the game, in terms of responding to natural disasters so that they’re as well prepared as they can be.”
Other events taking place during Law Week at Shepparton Library include ‘Mouldy home? Solutions to this and other rental problems’, which will take place on May 16, and ‘Get “Court” at the Shepparton Library’ on May 18.
