Judging began at 4pm, with Harini Govindaraj overseeing a judging panel with representatives from Benalla’s A&P Society, the Benalla Migrant Camp, Yarners craft group, the volunteer community and local photographer Rene Martens.
With over 20 submissions to the competition, judges had a tough task choosing their favourite.
The judges considered a range of qualities in each art work, including artistic flair, the theme of the festival, and details that enhanced the art work.
First prize was a certificate and a ‘lucky’ $88, donated by BMA president Cr Puna Gunaratne, which was awarded to Katherine Vessey.
Katherine’s artwork caught the judges’ attention for her use of vibrant colours and her thoughtful interpretation of the Chinese new year theme in a uniquely Benalla setting.
Second prize was a certificate and a ‘lucky’ $22, also donated by Cr Gunaratne, which went to Archith Suneeth.
Cr Gunaratne said he was impressed by the entries in the association’s first colouring-in competition.
“When we created our artwork, we thought it would be a great idea to find out what kids in Benalla would do with our local lunar new year festive scene,” he said.
“Thanks to all of the kids who entered their creative art for us to enjoy on our big night, and thanks to the judges for their thoughtful contributions to our event.
“The creativity and wisdom this activity brought to our event was fantastic, and we look forward to running another activity for kids soon.”
