Kaiela Arts hosting NGV’s Kids on Tour summer activities

Kaiela Arts education co-ordinator Rhonda Chrisanthou said the activities introduced children to First Nations art from different parts of Australia.

“We mostly focus on local artists but this is an opportunity to learn about artists from the Northern Territory,” she said.

Workshops teach participants about traditional art making and culture by studying the works of First Nations artists. The work of Maree Clark teaches kids about map making, and the significance of possum skin cloaks.

Teens are encouraged to take part in a workshop on Tuesday, January 18, when fashion stylist Aurie Indianna’s work guides participants through styling looks for celebrities.

For those with a keen eye for photography, Tom Blachford’s Shooting in the Dark workshop teaches teens to use their iPhone cameras to compose images.

Held in the same week as the Shepparton Art Museum’s summer workshops, Ms Chrisanthou said NGV’s activities at Kaiela Arts were the perfect accompaniment for a summer of art.

“We’ll be complementing activities happening at SAM,” she said.

“We’re spreading the love.”

Ms Chrisanthou said the gallery’s own materials and artworks would also be on display.

To participate, families and teens can pick up the activities on offer each day from Kaiela Arts.
