Deb Lynch, her husband and two great friends are gearing up to lose their locks in support of the Leukaemia Foundation — and they are looking for more to join them!
On the morning of Sunday, April 28 at the Aussie Hotel in Shepparton, Deb and her friends will take their seat in the barber’s chair for the World’s Greatest Shave.
The Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave is a fundraising event where participants shave, cut or dye their hair to raise money and show their support for Australians battling blood cancer.
Deb said she was astounded when she witnessed the work done by the Leukaemia Foundation first-hand after visiting her friend who had been receiving treatment in Melbourne for seven months.
“When I saw what was provided at no cost to them, I felt I needed to do something,” Deb said.
She emphasised the incredible accommodation provided to patients travelling to Melbourne, where everything from coffee cups to washing machines was provided in modern and clean facilities, located close to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
“We are raising money to keep this facility available to many patients that need short- and long-term accommodation in Melbourne at a very difficult time in their lives,” Deb said.
“We wanted to promote the incredible work that the Leukaemia Foundation does and to show our support [to our friend] in another way.”
For many, the act of shaving one’s head is a way of showing solidarity with cancer patients who often have no choice but to lose their hair during treatment.
Funds raised through the shave go towards finding accommodation for families who are forced to move away from home for treatment, providing free mental and physical support as well as furthering research into faster diagnosis and improved treatment.
Deb said she was not nervous about her new look because it was for a good cause, though she would have to invest in some beanies come winter.
