As they cannot, Greater Shepparton City Council wants to remind everyone to register their pets before Thursday, April 10.
All cats and dogs older than three months must be registered to ensure they are safe, identifiable and legally compliant.
Registration is free for pets under six months, while costs begin at $50 for desexed animals.
Although the annual fees are modest, they offer significant benefits to the community.
“By ensuring pets are registered, microchipped and properly identified, residents contribute to a safer and more responsible community,” council director of sustainable development Geraldine Christou said.
“Many pet owners may not realise that their registration fees help fund essential services, including reuniting lost pets with their owners, responding to animal welfare concerns and promoting responsible pet management to keep our community safe.”
It is important to note that all animals must be microchipped before registration.
Additionally, all cats must be desexed before registration unless they meet exemptions under the Domestic Animals Act 1994.
When registering a pet, owners must provide necessary documents, including microchipping and desexing certificates, as well as any applicable concession cards to qualify for discounts.
Eligible residents holding a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card may access support through the PAWS Program, which assists with desexing, microchipping and registering cats for a nominal fee.
Applications for this program close on Monday, March 31.
For those with registered pets, a renewal notice will be mailed as a reminder.
Pet registrations can be completed online through the council’s website or in person at the customer service centre at 90 Welsford St, Shepparton.
